Twitter for Writers

Twitter1 My friend Jan asked me yesterday to elaborate a little more on Twitter—mostly how to make connections to share her blog posts with a wider audience of readers.

So let’s say you’re on Twitter. You have a handful of followers and you are interested in promoting your blog posts or maybe a book.

First of all, you need more followers. How do you do that?

I think the best way is to steadily increase the number of people that you’re following. And you’re probably going to want to target readers and other writers.

There are different places you can find writers on Twitter.

Here are some good places to check out:

Authors on Twitter

Book Trade People on Twitter

More Authors on Twitter

Libraries on Twitter

You could hang out or possibly even be the moderator for a write chat:
Check out this article for write chat info

…I’ve copy/pasted the schedule from the post below. And this article has more in-depth info.

By using hashtags (the pound symbol), you can access conversations on Twitter that revolve around a specific theme. How do you get there? You look on the right hand side of your Twitter home page and you’ll see a search box with a magnifying glass next to it. Type in one of the hashtags below and click the magnifying glass, and you’ll be taken to a page that shows everyone’s tweets on that subject. You’ll be able to see conversations between different parties there, even if you don’t follow the persons involved.

You can also tag your tweets with hashtags to pick up followers. These are some popular ones (courtesy of Bubble Cow):

Meryl’s Notes also had some good ideas about writer-uses for Twitter. In fact, she dreamed up 50 uses of Twitter for writers.

I’d also recommend participating in #FF and #WW (writer Wednesday). There’s also some that do #MM (mystery Monday). I loved doing #FF, but now I have so many followers that the last time I did FF I got some negative feedback for spamming…it was just pages of return follows that I’d tweeted. So I’m going to have to think of some new way to participate.

If you like, you can also go to my profile page at @elizabethscraig and click on my followers and raid that list. Most of them are writers, readers, or other industry-related folks. Then you can click “follow” on each individual person. You might want to build your list up slowly. Not every person will follow you back. You can use a program like “Friend or Follow” to see who isn’t following you…and unfollow them, in return. There’s no need to have a Twitter relationship that’s a one-way street.

When you have your followers, you’ve got people to promote to, but also to share information with and network with. You could try different kinds of tweets, so you’re not just promoting your blog or book. Try retweeting others’ posts, sharing interesting links, tweeting about something interesting you heard about, etc.

What if you’re completely stumped by Twitter? My friend Krista Davis wrote a great couple of posts—a Twitter 101 and Twitter 202 that can help get you up to speed.

I’ll admit to using Twitter in a peculiar way. I have a good number of followers, but I pay very little attention to my Twitter feed. If someone sends something directly to me (an @ message), then I respond back to them with a DM (direct message)….because I’m trying to keep my profile page completely link-related. All my conversations take place through DM.

Following my Twitter feed would be totally overwhelming to me–seeing 3400 feeds update just makes me feel a little like I’ve got ADHD. Following fewer people would make it easier to read the feed…or else, use the TweetDeck to organize the folks you follow—you can organize the Tweeters by category or by your favorites.

Am I still getting something out of the Twitter experience? Definitely. But for me, it’s all about off-feed conversations and sharing resources and information, and networking. Still, I’ve made some good friends on Twitter and really enjoy the conversations we’ve had.

Hope this helps, y’all. Twitter does have a little bit of a learning curve, but one you get it, it’s pretty basic. And there’s a lot of great information you can get there. If you have any questions, let me know—if I don’t know the answer, I can find it.

Terry3 Here are writing links that I’ve posted to Twitter for the past 7 days. If you’re looking for a particular topic, just plug in your keyword into the search box at the top left-hand corner of the blog and the roundup with your subject will come up. To narrow your search down on the page, do a CTRL+F ,type your subject and hit enter.

And an update--I've gotten the links to go live, but I've lost my more-attractive formatting! I decided to go with functionality over looks. :)

WRITE WHAT YOU KNOW? By Lois Winston

LOVE, LIES cover small “Where do you get your story ideas?”

“Are any of your characters based on yourself or people you know?”

The above are the two most frequently asked questions I hear from readers. The third most frequently asked question is, “How do you research your sex scenes?” This question is never asked by someone who has read my books, always asked by a male, and usually is asked each year at my husband’s company Christmas party after considerable imbibing on the part of the buffoon asking the question.

But I digress (Can you blame me? What are those knuckleheads thinking???)

Anyway, there’s a writing axiom that states, write what you know. To some extent this is sound advice, but it’s also extremely limiting advice. I have a good friend who writes stories populated with vampires, werewolves, selkies, and other assorted weird creatures of the paranormal world. My friend is neither a vampire, a werewolf, nor a selkie, and I have it on good authority that she’s never met any such creatures. So obviously she’s not writing what she knows from first-hand experience.

In Love, Lies and a Double Shot of Deception, my most recent release. I wrote about secrets and revenge and the lengths some people will go in order to bury the former and achieve the latter. The plot is ripe with scandal. Drugs. Violence. Blackmail. Political machinations. Attempted murder. My heroine is a wealthy widow whose abusive, cocaine-snorting, deceased husband was about as low as a low-life can get.

Write what you know?

Hmm…I’ve never done drugs (sinus and headache meds don’t count), never blackmailed anyone, never tried to kill anyone, never been involved in politics except to vote, and my husband is the complete opposite of my heroine’s husband. I’m also far from wealthy. Very far. So no, the characters in Love, Lies and a Double Shot of Deception are neither based on me nor anyone I know, and the story line is far from autobiographical. However, some of the plot lines in the book are loosely based on actual events, just not ones involving me.

I get my ideas for my characters and my plots from the world around me. I’m a die-hard news junkie who has always believed that truth is stranger than fiction. That belief is reaffirmed every time I pick up a newspaper or turn on the evening news. I’ll hear a news byte or read an article, then give the event a “what if” spin. The voices in my head take over from there, and the next thing I know, I’ve got the plot for another book.

In my upcoming series, the Anastasia Pollack Crafting Mysteries, I do tap into my own experiences to some extent. My heroine is the crafts editor at a women’s magazine. Although I never worked as a magazine editor, I have worked for many magazines as a designer and did work for a few years as a craft book editor. Also, like my protagonist, I’ve raised teenage boys. However, with the exception of one other experience that I’ll keep to myself (you can always try guessing once the series comes out), what Anastasia and I have in common is far outweighed by our differences.

Assault With a Deadly Glue Gun, the first book in the Anastasia Pollack Crafting Mysteries, won’t be released until January. However, Anastasia and the rest of the editorial staff at the magazine where she works are blogging daily at Killer Crafts & Crafty Killers (http://anastasiapollack.blogspot.com), where you can find crafts projects, recipes, decorating tips and more. I hope you’ll stop by.

Award-winning author Lois Winston writes humorous women’s fiction, romantic suspense and amateur sleuth mysteries. Visit her at http://www.loiswinston.com or Anastasia at http://anastasiapollack.blogspot.com.

Lois is a fellow Midnight Ink writer…and way too nice to actually know about scandal, drugs and blackmail. :)Thanks so much for guest posting today, Lois!

Good and Bad Things About Synopses

Fig Tree at Kervaudu--Ferdinand Loyen Du Puigaudeau Yes, I have finished the synopsis I was asked to write and am now working on my three sample chapters for the possible new series.

Well, “finished” is maybe too strong of a word…considering the synopsis is 21 pages long and needs to be 8. (I’d thought they wanted a short synopsis, but they need a longer one. Not, however, 21 pages long.)

I think it would take me longer to write a short synopsis. I’d obsess over what was going into it too much. Just like Twain said, “I didn’t have time to write a short letter, so I wrote a long one instead.”

Good things about writing synopses

  • Planning ahead
  • Seeing how the story all fits together
  • Finding weaknesses in the story before starting
  • Knowing exactly where the story is heading.
  • Discovering plot holes.
  • Having fewer things to work out later—names, clues, red herrings, and the murderer’s identity are all included in the synopsis.

Bad things about writing synopses

  • Planning ahead
  • The time it takes—about 4 hours to write a complete synopsis (at least, this is as long as it took me)
  • Feeling like I’m writing to an outline, which saps a little of the creative mojo. Feels like writing-by-numbers.
  • Looking back and forth from my synopsis to my manuscript as I write. “Now, what did I say I was going to write here…?”
  • Not having the story surprise me as I go. It feels more calculated.

Will I do this again? I’m sure I will—many editors want a synopsis before giving the go-ahead on a book or new series. Will I choose to do this again when I don’t have to? I’m not so sure. I might do it on a much smaller scale.

How about you? Which side of the fence are you on?

Virtual Pockets

blog74

When I was a younger mom, I ruined several loads of laundry by forgetting to check my pockets before tossing my stuff in the washing machine.

Now I’ve gotten used to the drill of checking those pockets out.

There’s always stuff in them because when I vacuum I pick up marbles, Barbie shoes, crayons, Nerf bullets, and small metal objects off the floor and shove them in my pockets so I can continue vacuuming and won’t totally destroy the appliance (which has also happened before.)

At the end of the day, all kinds of craziness is in my pockets.

When I’m working on a first draft I just keep on going, too. The computer equivalent of my pockets is Word’s highlighting function. I just select the problem area.

Then I just keep on going.

What are the Barbie shoes and Nerf bullets in my manuscript?

Facts that I’m not sure of and need to research.

Character last names that I haven’t made up yet (I do *** for those)

Something that seems out of character

A setting that needs more of an in-depth description

Something I’ve realized isn’t in sequential place in the story

A continuity error I’ve noticed

When I’ve somehow lapsed into passive voice

Too many/too few dialogue tags

Bad transitions

Rambling

Boring. Lack of conflict.

The nice thing about the highlighting function, is that you can choose a different color for different things you need to correct. Or you can use Word’s Track Changes function to make comments to yourself in the margins.

What things do you put in your pocket for later as you write? Or do you jump in and make corrections while it’s on your mind?
